3 Key Topics: Digital Business, Enterprise Modernization, & EQengineered

Fireside Chat with EQengineered’s Director, Program Management & Consulting Services, Anne Lewson.

1. As enterprise organizations continue to transform and become digital businesses, what are the key areas on which they should focus to enable growth and the ability of the enterprise to compete and thrive?

I don’t think we can advise what key areas a company should focus on and instead, we can help them identify the most relevant digital transformation projects for their company, plan for them and manage them.

Companies need to think digital transformation projects across many years (i.e. 5 to 10 years at least) as this will allow them to justify bigger financial investments that can be rationalized across a longer period of time.

It is also essential that they align these projects with goals directly tied to the business needs for Customers and/or Employees.

Companies should ask themselves the following questions when looking for digital transformation opportunities:

What does the “business” need? (the “What”)

What is the value of the transformation (ROI)? (the “Why”)

What is the solution and when should it be implemented? (“How” and “When”)

The changes need to be driven from the top, by a leadership who demonstrates that change is part of the company’s culture, enables cross-functional collaboration and empowers their resources.

2. As there is a lot of enterprise discussion about modernization. What are the key challenges being faced in today's environment and how can organizations overcome these obstacles?

I have seen a lot of modernization projects that are either too late or too early, due to of a lack of planning.

An error in the timing implementation ultimately reduces their value:

Too early and the objective is not clear to the business, hence a lack of support and interest.

Too late, the project is hurried and may lead to shortcuts and lack of quality.

So, I would say a key challenge is “When”.

As we all know the pandemic accelerated the needs to become digital exponentially since the physical experience was limited or no longer possible and this created a time shift chasm.

Other key challenges are to make sure the project objectives are clearly defined and constantly reviewed by keeping in mind the 3 pillars of success (the what, the why and the how/when).  Agility is key here.

The teams implementing these projects need to be empowered and provided with strong business guidance too,
